Commemorating the Battle of the Somme

As part of the centenary events in France on 1st July to commemorate the battle of the Somme, Ridgeway School students were proud to lay wreathes and flowers on war graves to remember those who lost their lives one hundred years ago.

Ridgeway is proud to have been involved in the commemoration of The Battle of the Somme. Working with The British Council and a school in France, students took part in a number of initiatives designed to raise awareness of this significant historical event in the consciousness of young people.

History and Art teamed up with students creating poppies modelled on The Tower of London installation. In Art this was also underpinned with some beautiful collages based on the event of the battle. The project culminated in a trip to the battlefield itself – see below. Mr Foxley led Ridgeway’s commemoration and had this to say, ‘It is so important that we remember events like The Battle of the Somme so that we learn from them. I have been so impressed with our students’ engagement in this whole project.’
